September 21, 2012 Here we are examining fruit and diagramming its parts. |
August 2012
Below are all the bulletin board entries from last year. I will leave them up so new parents and children can see them. We won't always be able to do everything the same, and we will do lots of things that are not here, too! But you are welcome to take a look. They are in reverse order, with the most recent at the top. Our new entries will always be at the top, above this post.
5/27/12 For some reason I can't upload the video of the chicks hatching, so I'll try it this way. Here's the link. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FeZeB4GbEuI I hope you enjoy the children's excitement as much as the actual chicks hatching. I know I grin the whole time just listening to their squeals of delight!
5/21/12 We are so excited. Our baby chicks have started to hatch. We rigged up the webcam on my laptop to view inside the incubator and stream live video to the SMARTboard. This way when another chick starts to peck its way out of its shell, we can all see! Here's a picture of our setup. It's a little hard to see in this photo, but the incubator is the white thing on the right, with my laptop hanging over it. The projector is on the left, and the image on the SMARTboard is of the two eggs inside that we think will be next to hatch. Hopefully by tomorrow we will have a video. So fun!
5/14/12 We went to the Golden Rondelle to pick up our prizes. Each child won a $50 gift certificate to Barnes and Noble. Wow!! Booker the Owl was there to greet us with cookies and soda.

4/6/12 Our "Wild About Books" program was last week. It went very well. Here we are, all smiles!

3/26/12 Since we were among the first 50 classrooms in Racine to read 50 books per student, we earned a trip to Skatetown. So fun! Everyone skated. Thanks to Chris's Dad, Danny's Mom and Dad, and Isaac's Mom, for coming along to help. I couldn't have tied all those skates by myself! Here are some pictures of the action with Vision, Josh, and Tavaris:---------------------------------------------------------------
1/13/12 Book Club
We now have a Book Club in our room. We will be reading chapter books and discussing them with each other. Need a recommendation for a good book? Just ask us!
12/21/11 Winter Carnival
Our Winter Carnival was a huge hit! Thank you to all the families who sent frosting, sprinkles, M&M's, and money for prizes and other supplies. Thanks too, to the parents and grandparents who came in and helped out during the carnival! We couldn't have done it without you! Piggly Wiggly also donated all the cookies! Thanks! The children all worked very hard and learned so much. We earned $180.00 which we donated to H.A.L.O. Homeless Shelter. The children are very proud of their service project. You can see by the looks on their faces how gratifying it feels to do something good for others.
10/26/11 Second Grade Garden and Feast
As part of their Science curriculum, the second graders grew a late fall crop of cold-weather vegetables in their window-box planter garden: peapods, bok choy, and carrots. They harvested them and we cooked them into a stir-fry which they ate with rice. The children did journaling, measuring, weighing, and they calculated proportions on the recipe. They read the book Everybody Cooks Rice, by Norah Dooley. They found China on the map, and discussed cultural similarities and differences (especially similarities!) They counted to ten in Chinese with a Chinese teacher on You-Tube. Most of the children liked the chicken stir-fry, but some preferred their veggies raw with dip. Fun was had by all!
10/19/11 Seed Collections
The seed collections are in, and they look great!! You did a lot of hard work on them. If you didn't do yours yet, you still have to. The quarter ends November 4. Then it will be too late, and it will affect your science grade on your report card. Take a look! You worked hard! You should be proud! Click on a picture to see it closer.

9/14/11 Here we are with our Arthur stories.
