How to Find a Book that's Just Right

The district has started using an online testing service called AIMSweb.  It helps us to see several times a year how the children are progressing in reading and math.    But it has more to offer.  One of my favorite features is the book suggestions it gives for your child for reading for enjoyment.  All you need is your child’s lexile level, which I am sending home with each child this week.   It’s easy.  Follow these steps:

1.  Go to this web address:  http://www.lexile.com/fab/aimsweb/

2.  Fill in your child’s lexile level in the first box on the left.  Click “submit.”

3.  Then with your child, select areas of interest and submit.

This will make a handy reading list for the library, bookstore, or Tumblebooks online.  So fun!  You can even click on the books and preview them.   Call me if you have any trouble with the website.  You can use this year after year.  Your child’s future teachers will be happy to tell you the lexile level, as it changes every year.  The website even has another way to use it, using their grade level instead.

It’s important to keep reading over the summer to keep skills sharp.  But if the books are too hard, it’s frustrating.  These books will be just right.  Happy reading!
