WELCOME TO SECOND GRADE!

Dear Families of Room 32:
Welcome to second grade in Room 32!  I am very happy to be your child's second grade teacher.  The beginning of a new school year is always an exciting time for the children and for me.  I have lots of new ideas and I’m looking forward to working with all of the new second graders and you, their families.
I want the children to look forward to coming to school each day.  I also want each student to feel comfortable and safe in my classroom.  It is my job to teach, and to ensure that each child experiences success.  The work will be challenging at times, but they WILL be able to learn it if they pay attention and work hard.  Please encourage your child to always do their very best.  Second grade should be fun.  If there is a problem, please encourage your child to tell me about it, or you should alert me so I can rectify the unpleasant situation.
I will be sending notes, letters and reminders home every Friday in the Friday Folder, as well as contacting you by phone. You are always welcome to visit Room 32 or to call school (664-6050) and ask to speak to me during the day.  (12:30-1:00 is the best time.)  You are also welcome to call me at home in the evenings if there is a problem (639-5218).  Or you may prefer to send a note, or email me at kim.gloede@rusd.org.  I answer all emails daily. I’d love to have you come in and help, too.  You could come on a regular basis, or just once in a while.  Second Graders love to see their parents at school, (and they won’t always feel that way!)  If you are interested, check out our Volunteer page.
Second grade is an important year in your child's school career. We have a lot to do each day.  It is a long and busy schedule.  Your child will soon get used to the fast pace and quantity of written work.  It is important to be sure your child gets a good night's sleep every night and a nutritious, low-sugar breakfast before school each day.  They need to be dressed for the weather.  Layers are good in case the temperature changes during the day. Click here for more information about proper school dress. Your child will need to bring certain supplies in to school to keep them organized.  You received the recommended supply list in the mail, and it is available at most of the stores in August.  You can also see it here.  Check our specialist schedule to see when to bring gym shoes and library books.
Again, welcome to Room 32.  I look forward to spending this year with your child, and to meeting all of you at Open House and at conferences.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Kim Gloede

Our Student Teacher

December 3, 2012

This is our wonderful student teacher, Miss Conner.

This is her last week with us, and we will miss her when she is gone.  We have loved having her in our classroom teaching us and helping us!  We wish her the best of luck in her new career as a teacher, and we hope she will come back and visit us some time.

Do you have a Public Library Card?

If you don’t have a library card yet, you should get one.  It’s easy!  It’s free!  The Racine Public Library is at 75 Seventh Street downtown.  Check it out online too by clicking this link.

The first time you go, all you have to bring is a phone, electric, or gas bill, or some piece of mail that has your Racine County address on it.  From then on, you and your child will have your own library card to use.

Seed Collection

Grade Two Seed Collection

Dear Parents/Guardians,
Your child will need to do a simple project at home to bring in for Science class.  Parents will need to help with this project.  This project will be a large part of your child’s first quarter Science grade.  Here’s what is required:
1.     9 different kinds of seeds washed, dried, and glued onto a poster or paper.  (No large posters, please.  Draw lines to divide a piece of paper or card stock into nine boxes, and put one seed in each box.)

2.     Neatly label each seed with the name of the plant it came from. (This part may NOT be typed, and must be in the child’s handwriting.)

3.     Next to each seed, draw a picture of the plant or fruit or vegetable it came from.

4.     Your project will be due on Tuesday October 18.

Don’t worry.  This should be fun for you and your child as you work on it together.  See the back of this paper for a sample project.  The specific seeds in the sample are not required.  Please use any seeds you find outside or from food you eat.

Here's how I grade them:

        Seed Collection
    Points and Grading:
15  Nine different seeds
15  Labels on each seed
15  Picture of each plant
15  Neatness
15  Effort
15  On time
10  Following directions
_______Total     H   S   M

If you have any questions, please call me at school (664-6050), or at home (639-5218), or write me a note.
                                                               Sincerely,
                                                               Mrs. Gloede

Seed Collections were due October 18!  They are great!!  If yours is not done yet, you still have to do it.  Bring it in as soon as possible.  The quarter ends November 4.  Then it will be too late.  It will affect your report card grade in Science.  Questions?  Click here.  If you want to see them, look on the Bulletin Board Page.

Dress

Second Grade is messy!  Your child should dress accordingly.  Please do not send your child in expensive clothes with instructions not to get dirty.  We sit on the floor, do science projects, art, and sometimes planting.  Everybody needs to participate without fear of ruining a fancy outfit.

See our schedule for when to wear or send gym shoes.  Some families prefer to leave a pair of gym shoes in the locker so they never forget when it's gym day.  But the most convenient way is to wear gym shoes so your child won't have to change their shoes.

Hats are not allowed to be worn inside the school.  Jewelry, if it is too distracting, will be saved for your child in the backpack until the end of the school day.

Flip-flops are not a good idea, because when we go outside for recess, they are cumbersome to run and climb in, and do not offer enough protection.

Please make sure your child wears clothes that fit.  Pants that fall down are uncomfortable, and skirts or tops that are the wrong size may be too revealing, which is upsetting to your child.

In cold weather, PLEASE send your child dressed for the weather.  They are not allowed to stay inside for recess (unless the whole school stays in due to inclement weather, of course.)

Mittens, hats, snow-pants, and a coat with a working zipper are a MUST.  Please contact me if you cannot afford these items.

During the rest of the year, layers are a really good idea.  Sometimes our room is too hot or too cold. Then it's so nice if your second grader is able to adjust by putting on or taking off a sweater or sweatshirt.

Although seven- and eight-year-olds are learning more and more independence, they still need your supervision in dressing appropriately.  Please help their second grade experience to be a comfortable one.  Thank you very much for all your support from home.
